Giant Gizmo and Sligo Bay Sovereign Award Finalists
The finalists for 2016 Sovereign Awards were announced on January 24 and the Adena Springs North stallions Giant Gizmo and Sligo Bay were well represented.

Giant Gizmo's Amis Gizmo (pictured) is the favorite for Three-Year-Old Male honors. The Ivan Dalos homebred was a dominant winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes, rolling by 5 3/4 lengths in Canadian Classic. He also scored in the Plate Trial Stakes and Grade 3 Ontario Derby, galloping home by six lengths while establishing the new nine-furlong standard on the Woodbine main track. This is the second Sovereign Award nomination for Amis Gizmo. He finished second in the voting for champion Two-Year-Old male despite an unbeaten 2015 juvenile campaign.

Sligo Bay is the sire of two of the past three Woodbine Oaks winners, Neshama and Lexie Lou, both of whom are 2016 Sovereign Award finalists.

On the strength of her '16 Oaks victory, Neshama is a nominee for champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Finishing immediately behind her in the Oaks were fellow finalists Gamble's Ghost (by Ghostzapper) and Caren.

Lexie Lou is no stranger to Sovereign Award accolades having won Horse of the Year, Three-Year-Old Filly and Turf Female titles in 2014. She is favored for another trophy in the latter category. The Gary Barber-owned mare was victorious is a pair of 2016 Grade 2 events, the Nassau Stakes and the Dance Smartly Stakes in which she sprinted to a wire-to-wire score. She is the only finalist in her category with multiple graded wins in 2016.

Lexie Lou finished her career with 10 victories in 24 starts and over $1.7 million in earnings. She was sold for $1 million at the Keeneland November sale.

The Sovereign Awards ceremony will take place on April 13 at Palais Royale in Toronto.

With champion sire sons like El Prado, Kitten’s Joy, Galileo and Montjeu, the sire-line of the great Sadler’s Wells is dominant on both sides of the Atlantic. Sligo Bay is the top direct son of Sadler’s Wells currently at stud in North America.

Sligo Bay has done very well with mares carrying Mr. Prospector in their pedigrees. In fact, well over half of his stakes horses are out of mares that show Mr. Prospector within five generations.

MG2W Bourbon Bay is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector son Conquistador Cielo and Sligo Bay has worked with other Mr. Prospector strains such as Afleet, Carson City, Crafty Prospector, Fappiano, Gone West, and Miswaki. Mares by the Gulch son Thunder Gulch are interesting for Sligo Bay as his daughters have produced stakes winners by five different Sadler’s Wells-line stallions, three of them at the G1 level.

Sligo Bay is also doing very well with dams showing the influence of Caro. Champion/Classic Winner/Millionaire Lexie Lou is out of a mare by the Caro grandson In Excess (by Siberian Express). G2W Bay to Bay is out of a mare by the Caro stallion With Approval as is SP Garavougue. G3W Regalo Mia is out of a mare by the Unbridled son Red Bullet (dam by Caro). We find Caro as the damsire of GSP Northern Bay. Other sources of Caro include the In Excess son Indian Charlie, his son Uncle Mo, Alphabet Soup and Mizzen Mast (both sons of Cozzene) and Unbridled’s Song, who is bred similarly to Red Bullet.

Mares carrying the influence of Roberto have produced good results with Sligo Bay. His G3W Chirac is out of a mare by the Roberto grandson You and I (by Kris S.) while the second dam of 2016 Oaks winner Neshama is out of a mare by Roberto son Lear Fan. Overall, there are over 90 stakes winners bred Sadler’s Wells over Roberto.

Sligo Bay has sired SW Wind in My Wings out of a daughter of the A. P. Indy stallion Pulpit (dam by Mr. Prospector). Sligo Bay has also sired G3W Paladin Bay out of a mare bred Seattle Slew over Mr. Prospector putting mares by the wealth of stallions bred on the A. P. Indy/Mr. Prospector cross into play. Overall, Sadler’s Wells over A. P. Indy has produced at least 19 stakes winners, five at the G1 level.

The second dam of Wind in My Wings is by the Icecapade son Wild Again, also the damsire of SP Dancing Rage. This put mares by Adena Springs Wild Again son Milwaukee Brew in play for Sligo Bay.

Sligo Bay has done well with mares carrying the In Reality influence. Neshama’s third dam is by In Reality while SW Dulce Agar is out of a mare by the In Reality grandson Kipper Kelly (by Valid Appeal). That dam carries an additional strain of In Reality through Real Crafty Lady, the dam of Crafty Prospector. The second dam of the SP Sligovitz is by In Reality, while the second dam of SP Messy Marvin, is by the In Reality grandson Waquoit (by Relaunch).
