Impressive Wire-To-Wire First Winner for Silver Max

Maxis Babe rocketed out of the gate to establish a clear lead and never looked back en route to a sparkling Maiden victory at Woodbine Racecourse. Favored at 3-5, the juvenile filly is the first winner by record-setting Grade 1 winner Silver Max.

"Rafael Hernandez has not been tested on Maxis Babe, and won't be!" exclaimed Woodbine track announcer Robert Geller. "Maxis Babe striding free for a big win here....she's absolutely run them ragged".

Her final margin of victory was 4 3/4 lengths.

Bred by Adena Springs, Maxis Babe was purchased for $18,000 at last summer's CTHS Yearling sale. She's trained by Norman McKnight and races in the colors of Racer's Edge, Inc. and Maxis Stable. The bay is out of the Holy Bull daughter Bazooka Babe, a half-sister to Stronach Stables homebred Preakness S. (G1) champion Red Bullet.

The speedy Silver Max won all 12 of his races in gate-to-wire fashion, seven of them at the Graded level. His signature victory came in the Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile where he handed the great 2-time Horse of the Year Wise Dan his only defeat in his final 15 starts.

By the Silver Deputy son Badge of Silver, the wickedly fast Grade 1 Silver Max has the potential to be the next important Deputy Minister-line sire to emerge from Canada.

Mr. Prospector-line mares are especially promising for Silver Max as Silver Deputy (dam by Mr. Prospector), along with his sons and grandsons, have sired over 30 SWs out such dams. Overall there are over 80 SWs that show Silver Deputy on the top side of the pedigree and a return of Mr. Prospector on the bottom half.

The early Silver Max SP runner Torpedo Max is out of a mare by the Gone West grandson Quality Road (by Elusive Quality).

Silver Deputy male-line descendants have sired at least nine SWs with mares from the Forty Niner branch of the Mr. Prospector tree, including G1W Kodiak Kowboy (dam by Coronado’s Quest). End Sweep is the damsire of a SW by Badge of Silver and a SW by the Silver Deputy son Posse. Other sources of Forty Niner include Distorted Humor and his sons Sharp Humor, Any Given Saturday & Flower Alley.

Mares from the Fappiano offshoot should also go well with Silver Max. Silver Deputy-line stallions have sired at least 11 SWs, six graded SWs and two Grade 1 SWs out of Fappiano-line mares. Three of these are out of mares by the Fappiano grandson Unbridled’s Song.

The larger Deputy Minister/Caro cross has yielded over 20 SWs globally including two SWs out of Indian Charlie daughters (one those by Badge of Silver). This puts daughters and granddaughters of Indian Charlie’s son Uncle Mo in the game for Silver Max. Cozzene and his sons Alphabet Soup and Running Stag are collectively the damsires of eight more of these SWs. Other sources of Cozzene include Mizzen Mast and his Canadian son Mast Track.

Silver Deputy over Blushing Groom has produced six SWs (four graded, one Grade 1), all of them out of mares by Rahy.

The Storm Cat son Giant’s Causeway is out of a Rahy mare and his daughters and granddaughters are worth consideration. Daughters of the former Canadian Giant’s Causeway son Giant Gizmo, are especially attractive based on his success as a sire with the Vice Regent/Deputy Minister influence (nearly 50% of his stakes horses).

Badge of Silver has sired a SW out of a mare by the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat, the damsire of at least two other SWs by Deputy Minister-line stallions. The Deputy Minister/Storm Cat cross has produced over 35 SWs worldwide with Tale of the Cat the damsire of a trio of those. Daughters of the Canadian-based Storm Cat grandson Old Forester, a son of Forestry, can be considered for Silver Max as well.

Two-time champion sire Milwaukee Brew has done exceptionally well with Vice Regent/Deputy Minister-influenced mares (15 stakes horses) so the reverse of this prolific cross is also worth trying with Silver Max.

Badge of Silver has sired a Group 1 SW out of a mare by the Buckpasser grandson Silver Charm, one of at least three SWs bred Silver Deputy over Buckpasser. The Buckpasser son Spend a Buck is found in the pedigree of another Badge of Silver SW, putting mares by the former Adena Springs Spend a Buck son Einstein squarely in play for Silver Max.
