Summer Sunday Top Silent Name Exacta in $100,000 Ballade S.

It was a super spring Saturday for Summer Sunday as the four-year-old filly added the $100,000 Ballade Stakes to her resume in her Woodbine comeback.

With her Ontario Sires Stakes romp in the six-furlong distaff feature, the Silent Name-Dancing Allstar filly is now a four-time stakes winner from seven starts for trainer Stuart Simon and owners Anne and William Scott.

Back racing at Woodbine for the first time since winning last year's Fury Stakes in late-April, Summer Sunday pressed the pace through a :22.89 quarter before taking over command from early leader Without a Doubt approaching the half-mile mark in :45.65. She then rebuffed the challenge of defending Ballade Stakes champion Scotty's Model down the stretch to score by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:08.57.

“We've been working in the morning right beside other horses, teaching her how to relax and she showed it today,” said winning jockey Rafael Hernandez. “She broke good and we let the other horse set the pace. We just sat right next to her like we do in the morning and I was loaded at the three-eighths. When it was time to go, I just let her go and she just did her thing.”

Summer Sunday paid $7.80 to win as the slight 5-2 second choice to another Silent Name daughter, graded winner Silent Sonet, who stalked the pace and edged out Scotty's Model by a neck to take second-place honors.

Summer Sunday previously earned stakes wins in the Nandi and Muskoka during a perfect three-race juvenile campaign at Woodbine. The promising miss, whose sophomore season was cut short after the Fury, returned to action last month at Keeneland before adding to her perfect local record today.

“She had a lower body injury that kept her out as we were preparing for the Oaks,” said Simon, explaining the layoff. “It was disappointing. The vets thought we should give her two to three months and with Mr. and Mrs. Scott's patience, we said let's give her six months and really make sure and I am glad we did. We have our horse back and she's just been a real gift. I said she's never been better and I think she proved me right now. She's just a dream because she'll run on, and she'll run on different surfaces too so it's pretty nice.”

Bred in Ontario by Trinity West Stables, Summer Sunday is now five-for-seven lifetime with earnings soaring over the $300,000 mark.

Updated December 7, 2018

Mr. Prospector-influenced mares have always been obvious targets for Silent Name and he’s come through with 14 stakes winners and eight additional stakes-placed runners out of such dams.

Silent Name has a trio of stakes winners out of mares showing the Fappiano branch, including SP Silent Sam out of a mare by the Unbridled son Grindstone and new 2018 SW Zestina whose 2nd dam is by Unbridled.

Conquistador Cielo is found in the pedigrees of SW Hopping Not Hoping (grandsire of her 3rd dam) and Silent Serenity (sire of her 2nd dam).

Silent Name has stakes horses out of mares showing Not For Love, Seeking the Gold, Mining and Miswaki who are all bred on versions of the Mr. Prospector/Buckpasser cross.

SW Lokinforpursemonee is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector stallion Porto Foricos, who’s bred on the same Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross as Northern Afleet (by the Mr. Prospector son Afleet). Silent Name already has a stakes-placed runner on his resume out of a mare by Rizzi, a son of Afleet. Mares by the Northern Afleet son Afleet Alex are also promising for Silent Name.

SW Crysta’s Court is out of a mare by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor, who’s out of a daughter of Danzig, grandsire of Silent Name's dam. Silent Name has three other stakes winners and a Graded-placed runner out of mares that return Danzig and they are among the over 600 blacktype winners around the globe that show a Danzig double within four generations. Silent Name's new 2018 SW Zestina is out of a daughter of the Danzig stallion Hard Spun; G3W No Silent is out of a mare by another Danzig son War Chant (out of a Mr. Prospector mare). War Front is another bred Danzig over Mr. Prospector and his daughters and granddaughters should go well with Silent Name as should mares by Exchange Rate (Danzig/Seeking the Gold).

Silent Name has worked well Storm Cat-line mares. SW Hopping Not Hoping is out of a mare by Harlan’s Holiday, by the Storm Cat son Harlan. She joins the Silent Name stakes winners Valiant Cat (dam by Storm Cat) and G2W/G1SP Fanticola (dam by Tabasco Cat). SP Marten River is out of a mare by Tumblebrutus, a full brother to Giant’s Causeway, while SP Miss Ariel is out of a mare by the Ontario-based Storm Cat grandson Old Forester (by Forestry).

G2W/Breeders’ Cup-placed Silentio is an example of Silent Name’s affinity for the Seattle Slew broodmare line. He's is out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s best son, A. P. Indy, while SW Be Vewy Vewy Quiet is out of a mare by the A. P. Indy stallion Malibu Moon. SW Silent Serenity is out of a daughter by another Seattle Slew champion son, Capote, who’s also the damsire of G3SP Silent Eagle and the 3rd damsire of SW Clickity Clack. The 2018 2YO SW My Silencer is out of a mare by My Way Only a son of the Seattle Slew stallion Septieme Ciel.

Silent Name has also had good success with the most prominent Canadian Bold Ruler influence, that of Boldnesian through Bold Ruckus. We find Bold Ruckus in the pedigree of five Silent Name stakes horses including SW Silent Treat and SP Silent Flash out of mares by Bold n’ Flashy and SP Silent Respect out of a daughter of Bold Executive.

With a pair of new stakes winners and a new stakes horse in 2018 Silent Name is now the sire of eight stakes horses out of mares showing Caro. SW/G1SP Mr. Online and his 2018 SP full brother Carmenootz are out of a mare by the Caro grandson Alphabet Soup (by Cozzene). 2018 SW Silent Sting out of a daughter of Monarchos, a son of Maria’s Mon (dam by Caro). Mares showing the Fappiano grandson Unbridled’s Song (dam also by Caro) are very interesting for Silent Name as are daughters of Super Saver, by Maria’s Mon out of an A. P. Indy mare.
