Another 2YO Stakes Winner for Silent Name

Hopping Not Hoping, patiently handled by Jeffrey Alderson, collared Nerve Line in the final...

Hopping Not Hoping, patiently handled by Jeffrey Alderson, collared Nerve Line in the final strides to capture Saturday's $150,000 Shady Well Stakes, at Woodbine.

Watch the Shady Well Stakes

Trained by Barb Minshall for owners Murray Smith, Christopher Chop and Katharin Von Gavel, the victory by Hopping Not Hoping provided the 23-year-old Alderson with his first career stakes win in the 6 1/2-furlong turf event for Ontario-bred juvenile fillies.

Hopping Not Hoping, a dark bay daughter of Silent Name, arrived at the Shady Well from a rallying length score in a six furlong maiden allowance sprint over the Woodbine main on July 22.  She was making her turf debut, over a turf course rated as 'yielding', in the Shady Well and settled comfortably into third position along the rail as Nerve Line marked off splits of :24.57 and :49.79 under pressure from Reverse.

Nerve Line and Reverse continued their battle through the turn and were full of run down the lane, but Alderson angled Hopping Not Hoping off the rail and persevered to the wire to secure the ½-length win.  Nerve Line stayed on for place, by a neck, over Reverse.  Financial Recovery, the 6-5 mutuel favourite on debut, ran on well late to complete the superfecta.  Hopping Not Hoping covered 6 1/2-furlongs in 1:20.44.

Alderson was pleased with the game effort from his filly in her stakes debut, particularly to overtake the determined duo of Nerve Line and Reverse.

"She set me up perfectly. She was running real nice and relaxed. When we came into the stretch, a nice hole opened up and she shot on through," said Alderson. "She was really seeing those two (in front of her) and she dug in hard. I love this filly."

Minshall was confident in the decision to give Hopping Not Hoping her grass debut.

"Being a Silent Name we thought she might like it. It seemed like a good opportunity and the timing was right," said Minshall. "She's a really good filly and an unbelievably good mover so we thought we'd take a shot."

The victory marked the first stakes win of the meet for Minshall, and she was delighted to share the moment with the young rider.

"I've ridden Jeff from the beginning. I think he's a good rider, an up-and-coming rider. He's won on the filly and worked her a lot. There was no reason to take him off of her," said Minshall. "I have a lot of confidence in him and I told him in the paddock he was going to win his first stakes race today. I wanted to give him all the confidence in the world and there he was."

Hopping Not Hoping, bred in Ontario by Roger Fortier, banked $90,000 in victory while improving her record to two wins from three starts.

Mr. Prospector-influenced mares have always been obvious targets for Silent Name and he’s come through with six stakes winners and five additional stakes-placed runners out of such dams. SW Crysta’s Court is out of a mare by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor, SW/GSP Pyrite Mountain is out of a mare by Numerous and SW Silent Star is out of a mare by Not for Love. Silent Name has also sired stakes horses out of mares showing the Fappiano grandson Grindstone (by Unbridled), Geiger Counter, Conquistador Cielo, Miswaki, and the Afleet son Rizzi. This opens the door for mares by the Afleet stallion Northern Afleet and his son Afleet Alex. Northern Afleet is bred on the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross like Distorted Humor, Numerous and Not For Love.

Daughters and granddaughters of Street Cry (by Machiavellian) are very interesting for Silent Name. Sunday Silence over Machiavellian has produced at least six stakes winners and two Group 1 winners, including a Dubai World Cup champion. Street Cry is also a source of Never Bend (grandsire of his second dam), an influence we find in five Silent Name stakes winners, two of them winners at the Group level.

G2W/MG1SP Silentio is an example of Silent Name’s affinity for the Seattle Slew broodmare line. He's is out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s best son A. P. Indy. SW Silent Serenity is out of mare by another Seattle Slew champion, Capote, and the second dam of SW Mr. Online is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew.

Northern Dancer’s influence is found in about two-thirds of the stakes horses sired by Silent Name. We see Nijinsky II in the lineage of Pyrite Mountain and SW San Nicola Thunder as well as SP County Lineman. The Minstrel, a close relative of Nijinsky II, is found in the pedigree of two more stakes horses, including SW Viuva Rica.

Lyphard is found in the pedigrees of a quintet of Silent Name stakes horses, including Silentio and SW Silent Legacy

A pair of Silent Name stakes winners, Crysta’s Court and 2015 GSW No Silent show a double of Danzig (Silent Name’s maternal grandsire). No Silent is out of a mare by the Danzig stallion War Chant, while Crysta’s Court’s damsire, Distorted Humor, is out of a Danzig daughter.

Mares from the Storm Bird/Storm Cat broodmare line are increasingly promising targets for Silent Name. SW Valiant Cat is out of mare by Storm Cat while G2W/G1SP Fanticola is out of a daughter of Tabasco Cat. The overall Sunday Silence/Storm Cat cross has yielded at least 16 stakes winners. The Sunday Silence stallion Deep Impact, in particular, has sired at least eight stakes winners with the Storm Cat broodmare line, four of them Grade 1 winners. That group includes French G1W Beauty Parlour, one of his two stakes winners out of mares by Giant’s Causeway. This evidence makes mares by Giant's Causeway's best Canadian-based son, Giant Gizmo, worth consideration for Silent Name. Deep Impact, like Silent Name, is bred on the Sunday Silence/Northern Dancer cross.

Silent Name has sired a trio of stakes winners and two additional stakes horses out of mares carrying the Caro influence. This group includes SW/G1SP Mr. Online out of a mare by the Caro grandson Alphabet Soup (by Cozzene).
