Silent Name's Summer Sunday Best in Fury Stakes

Even-money favorite Summer Sunday persevered in the final furlong to capture the featured $125,000 Fury Stakes for Canadian-foaled three-year-old fillies on Sunday afternoon at Woodbine Racetrack.

Watch the Fury Stakes

Teaming up with jockey Rafael Hernandez, Summer Sunday, by Silent Name, broke well from post five and clocked an opening quarter-mile in :23.37 before coming under pressure from Queen’s Fate, who gained a short lead at the half in :45.82. Glamanation, an Adena Springs-bred stakes winner by Point of Entry, then rallied three-wide into contention entering the final turn of the seven-furlong sprint, but Summer Sunday forged on despite veering towards the grandstand side to score in 1:24.17. Glamanation ducked inside through the stretch and raced down the middle of the track to finish second, one and three-quarter lengths behind the winner, with the rail-skimming Avie’s Mineshaft a neck back in third.

“She just broke right on top and there was no way I was going to take her back,” said Hernandez, who rode his second stakes winner of the meet. “She was doing her job and you can see how she stuck it out, how wide she goes, still winning. If she goes straight, we should have won easy. She made me work hard.”

Not only did Summer Sunday overcome steering issues to notch the third stakes win of her career, but she managed to do so carrying a field-high 124 pounds.

“It was a little nerve-wrecking for a minute, but she came through finally and that was great,” said William Scott, who co-owns the Silent Name-Dancing Allstar filly with his wife Anne. “I was a little nervous about the weight – 124 pounds is a lot of weight this time of year in my estimate – but she handled it with ease.”

Summer Sunday remains undefeated over Woodbine’s all-weather track with three prior victories including the Nandi and Muskoka Stakes last season. Bred in Ontario by Trinity West Stables, the filly is four-for-five with her only loss in the Grade 3 Beaumont on Keeneland’s dirt course three weeks ago.

“She had trained okay over the dirt. We had no other real options. We really felt we had her away for the winter for a reason to get one start in her anyway,” said trainer Stuart Simon of Summer Sunday’s debut. “So we thought we’d give it a try, but it just wasn’t her preferred surface and it was a very tough bunch too. When you face those kinds of horses, you’ve got to have everything to your liking.”

All six fillies are eligible to the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks Presented by Budweiser (1-1/8 miles), set for June 9. Silent Name is also the sire of Silent Sting, winner of the Queenston Stakes on April 22. The Stronach Stables star is among the early favorites for the $1 million Queen's Plate.

Updated November 18, 2017

Mr. Prospector-influenced mares have always been obvious targets for Silent Name and he’s come through with 12 stakes winners and seven additional stakes-placed runners out of such dams.

2017 2yo SW Clickity Clack is out of a mare by Two Punch while the SWs Hopping Not Hoping and Silent Serenity show the Mr. Prospector son Conquistador Cielo in their second damlines.

SW Lokinforpursemonee is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector stallion Porto Foricos, who is bred on the Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross similar to the Afleet stallion Northern Afleet. Silent Name already has a stakes-placed runner on his resume out of a mare by Rizzi, a son of Afleet and mares by the Northern Afleet son Afleet Alex are also promising for Silent Name.

Silent Name has sired additional stakes winners out of mares by Distorted Humor (by Forty Niner), Numerous and Not For Love. All three of these broodmare sires are too bred on the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross (like Porto Foricos).

Distorted Humor is bred Mr. Prospector over Danzig (Silent Name's maternal grandsires) and the dam of G3W No Silent also shows these influences. He’s out of a mare by War Chant, by Danzig, with a second dam by Mr. Prospector. No Silent and SW Crysta’s Court are among Silent Name’s three stakes winners that are inbred to Danzig and they are among the 500-plus blacktype winners that show a Danzig double within four generations. War Front is another bred Danzig/Mr. Prospector and his daughters and granddaughters should go well with Silent Name as should mares by Exchange Rate (Danzig/Seeking the Gold).

Silent Name has shown a strong affinity for Storm Cat-line mares. SW Hopping Not Hoping is out of a mare by Harlan’s Holiday, by the Storm Cat son Harlan. She joins the Silent Name stakes winners Valiant Cat (dam by Storm Cat) and G2W/G1SP Fanticola (dam by Tabasco Cat). Storm Cat is also the sire of the second dam of 2017 2yo SW Clickity Clack.

Daughters and granddaughters of Street Cry (by Machiavellian) are very interesting for Silent Name. Sunday Silence over Machiavellian has produced at least eight stakes winners, six group/graded and two Group 1 winners, including Dubai World Cup (G1) champion Victoire Pisa. Street Cry is also a source of Never Bend (grandsire of his second dam), an influence we find in six Silent Name stakes winners, half of them winners at the Grade/Group level. Two 2017 SP runners by Silent Name also show Never Bend in their lineage. Sources of Street Cry include his sons Street Sense, Street Boss and former Canadian stallion Victor's Cry.

Northern Dancer’s influence is found in about two-thirds of the stakes horses sired by Silent Name. We see Nijinsky II in the lineage of SWs Pyrite Mountain and San Nicola Thunder as well as 2017 2yo SW Be Vewy Vewy Quiet. The Minstrel, a close relative of Nijinsky II, is found in the pedigree of two more stakes horses, including SW Viuva Rica. Lyphard is found in the pedigrees of a quintet of Silent Name stakes horses, including G2W/MG1SP Silentio and SW Silent Legacy.

Silentio is an example of Silent Name’s affinity for the Seattle Slew broodmare line. He's is out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s best son A. P. Indy while Be Vewy Vewy Quiet is out of a mare by the A. P. Indy stallion Malibu Moon. Silent Serenity is out of a daughter by another Seattle Slew champion son, Capote, who's also found in the pedigree of Clickity Clack.

Silent Name has sired five stakes winners, including a pair of 2017 juvenile stakes winners, plus three additional stakes horses out of mares carrying the Caro influence. SW/G1SP Mr. Online is out of a mare by the Caro grandson Alphabet Soup (by Cozzene) while the dams of four other stakes horses show a daughter of Caro in their pedigrees. This makes mares showing Unbridled’s Song and Maria’s Mon, both out of Caro mares, very interesting for Silent Name. 2017 2YO SP Silent Sting is out of a mare by the Maria’s Mon son Monarchos and daughters of Super Saver, by Maria’s Mon out of an A. P. Indy mare, certainly merit consideration.
