Silent Name's 'Lokin' Finds 3rd Stakes Win in Woodstock S.

Lokinforpursemonee, patiently and confidently handled by Luis Contreras, rallied impressively to take the April 22 $115,800 Woodstock Stakes, at Woodbine.

Watch the Woodstock Stakes

Owned and trained by John Ross, the bay son of Silent Name was making his seasonal debut in the six-furlong main track sprint for three-year-olds.

Contreras settled Lokinforpursemonee, the second-longest shot on the toteboard, near the back of the pack through the early stages of the Woodstock as Yorkton and another Silent Name colt, Marten River, set splits of :22.37 and :44.39 with heavy favourite Uncle B poised just to their outside.

Yorkton and Marten River were still one-two at the stretch call, but Contreras and Lokinforpursemonee were picking up steam and ground on their rivals with every step, going on to notch a 1 ¼-length victory. Uncle B, who was fractious in the gate, settled for second, while Yorkton was third. The final time was a brisk 1:09.16.

The pre-race plan Ross drew up worked to perfection.

"They told me he was going to come from off the pace,” noted Contreras. “He had so much confidence in the horse, that I just rode him the way he told me. He had a tremendous kick from the 3/8ths (pole) to the wire.

“I got a perfect race. I got a perfect trip. I was waiting for the 3/8ths to make my move. I asked him a little and he started to make his move by himself. Once I hit the quarter-pole, I just swung outside and he gave me everything.”

For Ross, it was a much more satisfying effort from the colt who concluded his two-year-old campaign finishing seventh and eighth, respectively, in the Cup & Saucer Stakes and Coronation Futurity.

"He was the highest earner, the highest weight – he carried 123 pounds,” noted Ross, of last year’s Victoria Stakes and Simcoe Stakes champ. “He beat some good three-year-olds here. I’m so proud of this horse, being by Silent Name. The way that Luis rode him today, that was kind of our plan. We let the little speed go. If you look at his sprint races, he does want to come from behind. I know last year, I tried him going long and sometimes you have to try with the big money for the three-year-olds. It didn’t work, but we’re back to the good plan again.”

Lokinforpursemonee, bred in in Ontario by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, banked $72,000 in victory while improving his record to 2-3-0 from seven starts. His career earnings now stand at $256,265.

Silent Name is showing a growing affinity for Storm Cat-line mares. His 2016 SW Hopping Not Hoping is out of a mare by Harlan’s Holiday, by the Storm Cat son Harlan. She joins the Silent Name stakes winners Valiant Cat (dam by Storm Cat) and G2W/G1SP Fanticola (dam by Tabasco Cat).

Mr. Prospector-influenced mares have always been obvious targets for Silent Name and he’s come through with nine stakes winners and five additional stakes-placed runners out of such dams. 2016 SW Hopping Not Hoping and SW Silent Serenity show the Mr. Prospector son Conquistador Cielo in their second damlines.

Another 2016 SW, Lokinforpursemonee, is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector stallion Porto Foricos, who is bred on the Mr. Prospector/Nureyev cross. This opens the door for mares by the Afleet stallion Northern Afleet and his son Afleet Alex. Silent Name already has a stakes-placed runner on his resume out of a mare by Rizzi, a son of Afleet.

Silent Name has sired additional stakes winners out of mares by Distorted Humor (by Forty Niner), Numerous and Not For Love. All three of these broodmare sires are too bred on the Mr. Prospector/Northern Dancer cross (like Porto Foricos).

Distorted Humor is bred Mr. Prospector over Danzig and the dam of G3W No Silent also shows these influences. He’s out of a mare by War Chant, by Danzig, with a second dam by Mr. Prospector. War Front is another bred Danzig/Mr. Prospector and his daughters and granddaughters should go well with Silent Name as should mares by Exchange Rate (Danzig/Seeking the Gold).

No Silent and SW Crysta’s Court are among Silent Name’s three stakes horses that are inbred to Danzig and they are among the 400-plus blacktype winners that show a Danzig double so far within four generations

Daughters and granddaughters of Street Cry (by Machiavellian) are very interesting for Silent Name. Sunday Silence over Machiavellian has produced at least eight stakes winners, six group/graded and two Group 1 winners, including Dubai World Cup champion Victoire Pisa. Street Cry is also a source of Never Bend (grandsire of his second dam), an influence we find in six Silent Name stakes winners, half of them winners at the Grade/Group level.

Northern Dancer’s influence is found in about two-thirds of the stakes horses sired by Silent Name. We see Nijinsky II in the lineage of Pyrite Mountain and SW San Nicola Thunder as well as SP County Lineman. The Minstrel, a close relative of Nijinsky II, is found in the pedigree of two more stakes horses, including SW Viuva Rica. Lyphard is found in the pedigrees of a quintet of Silent Name stakes horses, including G2W/MG1SP Silentio and SW Silent Legacy

Silentio is an example of Silent Name’s affinity for the Seattle Slew broodmare line. He's is out of a mare by Seattle Slew’s best son A. P. Indy. SW Silent Serenity and SP Silent Eagle are out of mare by another Seattle Slew champion son, Capote, while the second dam of SW Mr. Online is a granddaughter of Seattle Slew.

Silent Name has sired a trio of stakes winners and two additional stakes horses out of mares carrying the Caro influence. This group includes SW/G1SP Mr. Online out of a mare by the Caro grandson Alphabet Soup (by Cozzene).
