Milwaukee Brew's Coltimus Prime Easy Clasico del Caribe Victor

The well-traveled Coltimus Prime made a powerful move around the far turn and coasted to victory in the Clasico del Caribe Invitational Cup before a raucous crowd at Gulfstream Park.

Watch the Invitational Cup

A son of Milwaukee Brew, Coltimus Prime emerged as a leading three-year-old in Canada during the 2014 after a smart win in the Prince of Wales Stakes, the 2nd leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. He was purchased by jockey-turned-bloodstock-agent Rene Douglas and has achieved major success in Douglas' native Panama.

Coltimus Prime earned his way to the Copa Invitacional by winning the Presidente de la Republica (G1) June 4 at Hipodromo Presidente Remon racetrack – the biggest race in Panama.

“The first time I rode in (Presidente de la Republica), I won it. I thought it would be a great idea to try and win it as an owner. I sent him to Panama and thank God luck was on my side and we were able to win the race,” Douglas said. “That race is a mile and a quarter, the same thing as the (Invitational Cup). The idea was to send him there for the big race in Panama and win it if I can and then qualify here for this race in Gulfstream. I thought he had the class and I think he was the right horse for Panama for that distance."

Coltimus Prime was ridden by the red hot Irad Ortiz and the final margin of victory was 2 1/4 lengths.

“It’s been an amazing day winning three races...” said Ortiz, Jr. "Everyone from these countries dreams of winning these races and in our country the biggest race for us is this Caribbean Classic. For some people this may not be as big, but for me it’s like a Breeder’s Cup race.”

“We were honored to host such an incredible event,” said Tim Ritvo, President of Gulfstream Park and COO of The Stronach Group. “This truly was the brainchild of our founder and honorary chairman Mr. Frank Stronach. This has been two years in the making. [The Stronach Group’s President and Executive Board Member] Mike Rogers and myself traveled to Panama and Puerto Rico the last couple years in hopes of bringing the Clasico Internacional del Caribe to North America and Gulfstream Park, and the response was incredible. We hope to continue building on our partnership with the fans and horsemen from Latin America and the Caribbean and we thank them for participating.”

Like his sire, Wild Again, Milwaukee Brew has performed well with a wide array of influences, siring stakes winners out of mares from at least nine different broodmare lines.

Milwaukee Brew has had tremendous success with the Deputy Minister broodmare line. One of his all-time best runners, Champion/millionaire Milwaukee Appeal is out of a mare by the Deputy Minister son Open Forum. Multiple Graded SW Flipcup, is out of a mare by the Deputy Minister son Touch Gold, while SW Amazing Rose is out of a mare by Awesome Again, also the damsire of GSP Harley Street. Overall, 25% of Milwaukee Brew’s stakes horses are out of mares that show Deputy Minister within five generations including SW Zdeno (dam by Silver Deputy), G2W Milwaukee Princes (Salt Lake) and SW Hometown Gossip (Graeme Hall, a son of Dehere). SW Sweater Weather and SP Tulio’s Brew show Deputy Minister's sire, Vice Regent, in their second damlines.

Classic winner Coltimus Prime and G1W Hector Enrique are examples of Milwaukee Brew’s successes with the Forty Niner branch of the Mr. Prospector sire-line. The former is out of a mare by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor while the latter is out of a mare by Coronado’s Quest. SW Sinister Brew is also out of a Forty Niner granddaughter (his dam is by Gold Case) and the second dam of SW/GSP Procurement is by Forty Niner.

Procurement is out of a mare by the Fappiano son Unbridled while 2017 SP 2YO Sheriff Clarke is out of a mare by the Unbridled son Broken Vow. We also find Fappiano in the lineage of G1W Akheel and SP Judge Brew, who is out of a mare by Cryptoclearance, a stallion bred Fappiano over Vice Regent.

Champion Ginger Brew is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector son Conquistador Cielo, also the second damsire of SP Salomea. Milwaukee Brew has an additional stakes horse out of a mare by the Conquistador Cielo son Marquetry, another stallion out of a Vice Regent daughter.

Milwaukee Brew has sired a trio of stakes horses out of mares showing Crafty Prospector, including SW Hometown Gossip. Crafty Prospector and Unbridled are both bred on versions of the Mr. Prospector/In Reality cross and In Reality is found in a total of eight Milwaukee Brew stakes horses. Among those is Milwaukee Appeal, whose second dam is by the In Reality son Valid Appeal. In addition, Milwaukee Brew’s G1W Dr. Zic is out of a mare by Holy Bull, whose sire, Great Above, has a similar genetic makeup to In Reality. The larger Wild Again/In Reality cross has produced at least nine stakes winners, including G1W winner Stellar Jayne by a Wild Again son.

Storm Cat and Danzig are two Northern Dancer-line targets for Milwaukee Brew. SW Wild Catomine’s second dam is by Storm Cat and Tulio’s Brew is out of a mare by the Storm Cat grandson Menifee.

Danzig is found in a quartet of Milwaukee Brew stakes horses including Coltimus Prime and SW Trini Brewnette.
