Frank DiGiulio Jr.'s Sweater Weather, patiently handled by Jermaine Bridgmohan, picked up her second stakes win of the meet with an impressive stretch run in Sunday's co-featured $125,000 Classy 'n Smart Stakes, at Woodbine.

Watch the Classy 'n Smart Stakes

Trained by Robert Tiller, the five-year-old Milwaukee Brew bay arrived at the 1 1/16-mile Tapeta route for Ontario-sired fillies and mares from a similar driving score in the Algoma Stakes on August 31.

Generous Touch, winner of the Passing Mood and Eternal Search Stakes in July, set splits of :25.13 and :50.99 with Sparkles' Girl on her flank and Hot Kiss, the 3-5 mutuel favourite, stalking from third position. Galina Point moved up outside of Hot Kiss down the back straight as Generous Touch led the field into the final turn and tried to kick clear.

The ever-patient Bridgmohan was last into the turn with Sweater Weather but rallied impressively around rivals to surge past a game and determined Generous Touch and secure a 1 1/4-length win.  Hot Kiss battled gamely down the lane and found an inside seam late to get up and earn place money by a head over Generous Touch. Sweater Weather stopped the clock in 1:45.11.

Bridgmohan, aboard for the Algoma score, was content at the back of the pack aboard Sweater Weather.

"The filly was comfortable and that's the main thing. She was happy being there," said Bridgmohan. "She made a good run like she always does. She always tries. She's such a wonderful filly."

Tiller had complete confidence in Bridgmohan, the filly's regular pilot.

"The game plan was to let her relax. That's what made her win before and I knew she was very capable of closing," said Tiller. "She's really getting good this filly. She's been wonderful for us.

"She's got a lot of pump," continued Tiller. "She's a trier and I just let my riders ride their own race. All we wanted was to let her close ground."

Sweater Weather, bred in Ontario by Osprey Stable, banked $75,000, pushing her lifetime earnings to $460,172, while improving her record to 6-5-3 from 19 starts.

Like his sire, Wild Again, Milwaukee Brew has performed well with a wide array of influences, siring stakes winners out of mares from at least nine different broodmare lines.

The Deputy Minister son Open Forum is the damsire of one of Milwaukee Brew’s all-time best runners, Champion/millionaire Milwaukee Appeal. That tremendous success with mares showing the Vice Regent/Deputy Minister influence continues on. Flipcup, a graded winner in each of the past two seasons,  is out of a mare by the Deputy Minister son Touch Gold. SW Amazing Rose is out of a mare by another Deputy Minister stallion, Awesome Again, also the damsire of the graded-placed Harley Street. Overall, 37% of Milwaukee Brew’s stakes horses are out of mares that show Vice Regent within five generations including SW Zdeno (dam by Silver Deputy), G2W Milwaukee Princes (Salt Lake) and SW Hometown Gossip (Graeme Hall, a son of Dehere). MSW Sweater Weather and SP Tulio’s Brew show Vice Regent in their second damlines.

Classic winner Coltimus Prime and G1W Hector Enrique are examples of Milwaukee Brew’s successes with the Forty Niner branch of the Mr. Prospector sire-line. The former is out of a mare by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor while the latter is out of a mare by Coronado’s Quest. SW Sinister Brew is also out of a Forty Niner granddaughter (his dam is by Gold Case) and the second dam of SW/GSP Procurement is by Forty Niner.

Procurement is out of a mare by the Fappiano son Unbridled and SP Judge Brew is out of a mare by the Fappiano grandson Cryptoclearance. We also find Fappiano in the lineage of G1W Akheel. Mares by the Cryptoclearance son Victory Gallop (dam by Vice Regent) are certainly interesting for Milwaukee Brew.

Champion Ginger Brew is out of a mare by the Mr. Prospector son Conquistador Cielo, who we also find as the second damsire of SP Salomea. Milwaukee Brew has an additional stakes horse out of a mare by the Conquistador Cielo son Marquetry, another stallion out of a Vice Regent daughter.

Milwaukee Brew has sired a trio of stakes horses out of mares showing Crafty Prospector, including Hometown Gossip. Crafty Prospector and Unbridled are both bred on versions of the Mr. Prospector/In Reality cross and In Reality is found in a total of eight Milwaukee Brew stakes horses. Among those is Milwaukee Appeal, whose second dam is by the In Reality son Valid Appeal. In addition, Milwaukee Brew’s G1W Dr. Zic is out of a mare by Holy Bull, whose sire, Great Above, has a similar genetic makeup to In Reality. The larger Wild Again/In Reality cross has produced at least eight stakes winners, including G1W winner Stellar Jayne by a Wild Again son.

Storm Cat and Danzig are two Northern Dancer-line targets for Milwaukee Brew.

SW Wild Catomine’s second dam is by Storm Cat and Tulio’s Brew is out of a mare by the Storm Cat grandson Menifee.

Danzig is found in a quartet of Milwaukee Brew stakes horses including Coltimus Prime and SW Trini Brewnette.
