More Than Good was more than prepared for his stakes debut on short rest Monday night, leading the field home in the $100,000 Karl Boyes Memorial Stakes at Presque Isle Downs. The 5-year-old is the latest Stakes winner for the Adena Springs stallion Macho Uno, who's earned a strong reputation as a sire of talented, tough and durable runners.

Watch the Karl Boyes Memorial Stakes

Grade 3 winner Wellabled, sent off as the heavy favorite in the Boyes Memorial, rushed out to lead by a length and a half through the opening quarter in 22.25 seconds. Oldies But Goodies sat second, on near-even terms with More Than Good and jockey Fernando Salazar Becerra. The field began to close in on Wellabled around the turn. Wellabled kept his head in front into the lane, but More Than Good rushed up to be second, with Shekky Shebaz a threat on his hip.

Wellabled drifted out at the eighth pole as he began to tire badly late, with More Than Good, still full of run, assuming the lead. The gelding continued to draw off to win by 2 1/4 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:03.17 for the 5 1/2 furlongs on the all-weather track.
Less Than Perfect, the longest shot on the board, closed from sixth in the field of seven, and from widest of all, to be second by 1 3/4 lengths. Caloric, who was forced to check in the lane as Wellabled tired, was up to be third by a head over Shekky Shebaz. Then came Oldies But Goodies, Wellabled, and second choice Lanier, also a graded stakes winner.

Macho Uno, an Eclipse Champion Juvenile in his racing days, is the sire of several other tough, talented & durable runners, including Private Zone & Mucho Macho Man (Breeders' Cup Classic) who scored multiple Grade 1 victories after their 4-year-old seasons.

Updated October 10, 2019

Macho Uno is having very good success with a wide variety of Mr. Prospector strains and around 48 % of his stakes horses are out of mares that show Mr. Prospector in their pedigrees within five generations.

Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man is out of a mare by the Two Punch stallion Ponche while the GSP runners Dia de Pago and Treble are out of a direct Two Punch daughters.

GSW Kirby's Penny is out of a mare by the Forty Niner grandson Jules (by Peace Rules). Three of the first four Macho Uno starters out of mares by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor have earned blacktype - SW Hy Riverside and SW Uno Mas Modelo, along with G3SP Banree.

Distorted Humor is out of a mare by Danzig, an influence found in a total of six Macho Uno SWs, including G1W Wicked Style and record-setting G2W winner Potesta.

Macho Uno has sired runners like Saratoga SW Picco Uno (dam by Western Expression), SW Hampstead Heath (dam by Gone West) and SW More Than Good (dam by Mr. Greeley) out of dams showing the Gone West influence.

A total of seven Macho Uno stakes horses show Mr. Prospector through Fappiano, including SW/Sovereign Award finalist Decision Day (dam by Unbridled's Song). Fappiano's damsire is by Dr. Fager, a half brother to Ta Wee, dam of Macho Uno’s grandsire, Great Above. Inbreeding/line-breeding to their dam, Aspidistra, is also found in the pedigrees of Classic winner Harlem Rocker, G2W Mucho Mas Macho, G1SP Indulgence and eight other Macho Uno stakes horses. The Storm Cat son Forestry and his son Shackleford represent some other contemporary sources of Dr. Fager.

Ponche (damsire of Mucho Macho Man) is bred Mr. Prospector over Nijinsky II. We find Nijinsky II in the pedigrees of 12 Macho Uno stakes horses and Mr. Prospector/Nijinsky II combined in the dams of five of those, including G2W Overheard. The Fappiano grandson Broken Vow (by Unbridled) is bred Mr. Prospector/Nijinsky making his daughters interesting for Macho Uno. The dams of Malibu Moon and Tapit are also bred on this cross as is Rubiano (by Fappiano), damsire of War Front (by Danzig).

Nijinsky II and Storm Bird are bred similarly and we find the Storm Bird influence in the dams of eight Macho Uno stakes horses. Among those are GSW/millionaire Danon Legend and SW Revenant One out of a Storm Cat daughters. The second dam of SW Hy Riverside is by the Storm Cat son Hennessy and SW Done Deal is out of a mare by Tale of the Cat (Storm Cat over Mr. Prospector).

Given that Macho Uno is a half-brother to Awesome Again (by Deputy Minister) it’s no surprise that he’s produced good results with Vice Regent/Deputy Minister-influenced mares. Vice Regent appears in a total of 12 stakes horses by Macho Uno, including MG1W winner Private Zone and MGSW/G1SP Tommy Macho.

Tommy Macho is also an example of Macho Uno’s affinity with Seattle Slew, an influence found in 12 more of his stakes horses. Among these is G2W Macho Macho, SW Holy Reina (dam by Capote) and SW Picco Uno (second dam by Dixie Union who’s out of Capote daughter).

From just nine starters out of Wild Again mares Macho Uno has sired G1W Macho Again and G3W Silsita. Wild Again is also the second damsire of GSW Kirby's Penny.

Like Mr. Prospector, Sharpen Up is a paternal grandson of Native Dancer and is an ancestor found in the pedigrees of some important Macho Uno runners. G1W Wicked Style is out of a mare by Sharpen Up’s son, Trempolino. SW Firenze Feeling is out of a mare by the Sharpen Up grandson Elmaamul, by Diesis, who is also the second damsire of G2W Overheard.
