Macho Uno's Picco Uno The One in Union Avenue S. at Saratoga

Picco Uno posted an authoritative first stakes victory Thursday afternoon at Saratoga, drawing off to win by 2 1/2 lengths over the 3-2 favorite Quezon in the $100,000 Union Avenue Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares.

Watch the Union Avenue Stakes

Given time off leading up to Thursday’s $100,000 Union Avenue Stakes, at her favored distance of 6½ furlongs, Picco Uno looked like the same horse who had put together a four-race streak win streak from late December to mid-May. Tracking pacesetter She’s All Ready into upper stretch, the four-year-old daughter of Macho Uno surged to the front, holding off all comers in winning by 2½ lengths.

Picco Uno covered 6 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:16.57 and paid $9.70.

“It’s very exciting,” said winning trainer Jason Servis. “The owners flew up from Georgia, so I’m glad it all worked out. She definitely benefited from the time off since her last start. She had a terrific breeze the other day. She ran like we were hoping she would. She’s an average-looking filly, but she gets over the ground pretty good.”

Picco Uno broke alertly from her no. 9 post and had no trouble settling into a comfortable spot behind She’s All Ready. And there was plenty of room to operate when Picco Uno made her move swinging into the stretch. The lead was a length and a half at the eighth pole, but there was no serious threat as Irad Ortiz Jr. worked on Picco Uno through the final sixteenth.

“I always give her an aggressive warm-up because she’s the type of filly who doesn’t show much in the morning, and she’s so quiet,” said Ortiz. “But when it’s time to run, she can run. I tried to make sure she was on her game today because she had to run.”

Servis said Ortiz used good judgement taking Picco Uno off the early leaders.

“It looked like he was going to try and go,” said Servis. “He’s riding well. (This filly) gets over the ground real good and doesn’t work hard to do it.”

Picco Uno, who competes for Kennesaw Mountain Racing LLC, won for the sixth time in a dozen starts and has now earned $299,667. She also has three seconds and a third. Picco Uno was bred in New York by Topsmeade LLC and Adena Springs Farm.

Updated August 18, 2017

Nearly three-quarters of Macho Uno’s stakes horses are out of mares that carry at least one strain of Northern Dancer and the Nijinsky II strain has been particularly powerful. The second dam of G2W Macho Macho is by the Nijinsky II son Green Dancer and Nijinsky II is found in the pedigrees of 11 other stakes horses by Macho Uno, including Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Mucho Macho Man and MGSW Overheard.

Nijinsky II & Storm Bird are bred along similar lines and GSW/Millionaire Danon Legend is out of a mare by the Storm Bird son Storm Cat.

We find Danzig in the pedigree of Hollywood Oaks (G2) winner Potesta (dam by Furiously) and G1W Wicked Style as well as a trio of current stakes horses.

Given that Macho Uno is a half-brother to Awesome Again (by Deputy Minister) it’s no surprise that he crosses well with Vice Regent/Deputy Minister-line mares. Vice Regent appears in the pedigrees of 16 stakes horses by Macho Uno, including MG1W winner Private Zone, whose second dam is by Deputy Minister. Macho Uno has also sired stakes horses out of mares by other Deputy Minister sons including Silver Deputy and Touch Gold.

Icecapade is bred on the same Nearctic/Native Dancer cross as Northern Dancer and mares by his son Wild Again have been extremely successful when bred to Macho Uno. From just six foals to race, the Macho Uno x Wild Again cross has produced six winners including G1W Macho Again and G3W Silsita.

MGSW/MG1SP Tommy Macho’s second dam is by Seattle Slew, an influence found in 12 other Macho Uno stakes horses. Among these is the G2W Macho Macho (dam by the Seattle Slew son General Meeting) and SW Holy Reina (dam by Capote).

Over 40% of Macho Uno’s stakes horses are out of mares that show Mr. Prospector in their pedigrees within five generations. Mucho Macho Man is out of a mare by the Two Punch stallion Ponche and 2017 G2SP 2YO Dia de Pago is out of Two Punch daughter. This makes mares by another son of Two Punch, Smoke Glacken, worth consideration. Overheard is out of a daughter of the Gulch stallion, Thunder Gulch. Classic winner Harlem Rocker, G3W Kays and Jays, SW Swifty Victress and SW Uno Mas all show Mr. Prospector in their second damlines. With granddaughters of Forty Niner, Macho Uno has sired a trio of stakes winners, including Daltiva (G3-Brz) (dam by Jules) and 2017 stakes winner Hy Riverside (dam by Distorted Humor).

Five Macho Uno stakes horses show Mr. Prospector through Fappiano, including SW/Sovereign Award finalist Decision Day (dam by Unbridled's Song). Fappiano's damsire is Dr. Fager, who is a half brother to Ta Wee, dam of Macho Uno’s grandsire Great Above. Inbreeding to their dam, Aspidistra, is also found in the pedigrees of Harlem Rocker, G2W Mucho Mas Macho, G1SP Indulgence and four other Macho Uno stakes horses. In addition, we find this pattern in GSW Flashy American, a granddaughter of Holy Bull, as well as G1Ws like Unbridled and Quiet American. The Storm Cat son Forestry is another contemporary source of Dr. Fager (sire of his second dam).

Like Mr. Prospector, Sharpen Up is a paternal grandson of Native Dancer and is an ancestor of some important Macho Uno runners. G1W Wicked Style is out of a mare by Sharpen Up’s son, Trempolino. SW Firenze Feeling is out of a mare by Elmaamul, a son of Diesis (Sharpen Up) who is also the second damsire of Overheard.
