Big Late Run by Macho Uno's Small Bear to Take Gio Ponti S.

Small Bear used a strong rally in the lane to win the $150,000 Gio Ponti Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf by a neck over Funtastic.

Watch the Gio Ponti Stakes

Small Bear, a gelding by Macho Uno owned by Hall of Fame football coach Bill Parcells, was winless in three previous starts on turf. He did run a solid second in the Better Talk Now Stakes at Saratoga two starts back.

Englehart felt Small Bear would be better off being taken back off the pace and come with one late run. But jockey Rajiv Maragh called Englehart earlier in the day and felt there wasn’t ample speed in the field to make that running style effective. Englehart told Maragh to ride him as he saw fit, but did ask Maragh to have Small Bear in the clear when it came time to make his run.

Maragh had Small Bear along the inside, saving ground down the backstretch while Secretary At War set fractions of 24.77 seconds for the quarter, 49.40 for the half-mile, and 1:12.97 for six furlongs.

Small Bear was inside of Funtastic, ridden by Jose Ortiz, who launched his bid on the far turn. Maragh followed that move and tipped Small Bear four to five wide into the clear turning for home. Funtastic caught Secretary At War at the sixteenth pole, but Small Bear was charging hard at him and caught Funtastic late.

Small Bear covered the 1 1/16 miles over turf listed as firm but was more like good in 1:42.79 and returned $19.80 as the fourth choice in the field of 10.

“The main thing that Jeremiah said to me was when it’s time to go, get him in the clear,” Maragh said. “I had an opportunity where I could probably squeeze him into a tight spot along the inside, but that’s not his preferred running style. He’s much more effective on the outside, so I kind of went out of my way a little bit just to put myself into the clear when I was ready to make my move.”

Bred in Kentucky by Martin Lake & Serendipity Farm, Small Bear has now amassed a bankroll of $286,432.

Englehart said that Small Bear would join the string he has this winter at the Palm Meadows training center in south Florida.

Updated October 24, 2017

Macho Uno has had some of his best and most recent successes with mares carrying the influence of the Mr. Prospector son Two Punch. Breeders’ Cup classic winner Mucho Macho Man is out of a mare by the Two Punch stallion Ponche while 2017 G2SP 2YO Dia de Pago is out of a direct Two Punch daughter.

Ponche is bred Mr. Prospector over Nijinsky II. We find Nijinsky II in the pedigrees of nine Macho Uno stakes horses and Mr. Prospector/Nijinsky II combined in the dams of four of those including G2W Overheard. The Fappiano grandson Broken Vow (by Unbridled) is bred Mr. Prospector/Nijinsky making his daughters interesting for Macho Uno. The dams of Malibu Moon and Tapit are also bred on this cross as is Rubiano (by Fappiano), damsire of War Front.

Nijinsky II and Storm Bird are bred similarly and we find the latter influence in the dams of five Macho Uno stakes horses. Among those are GSW/Millionaire Danon Legend out of a Storm Cat daughter and 2017 SW Hy Riverside, second dam by the Storm Cat son Hennessy

Six Macho Uno stakes horses show Mr. Prospector through Fappiano, including SW/Sovereign Award finalist Decision Day (dam by Unbridled's Song). Fappiano's damsire is Dr. Fager, a half brother to Ta Wee, dam of Macho Uno’s grandsire Great Above. Linebreeding to their dam, Aspidistra is also found in the pedigrees of Classic winner Harlem Rocker, G2W Mucho Mas Macho, G1SP Indulgence and six other Macho Uno stakes horses. The Storm Cat son Forestry and his son Shackleford represent some contemporary sources of Dr. Fager.

From three starters out of mares by the Forty Niner son Distorted Humor, Macho Uno has sired 2017 SW Hy Riverside and G3SP Banree. Distorted Humor is out of a mare by Danzig, an influence also found in Macho Uno’s first G1W Wicked Style and G2W winner Potesta.

Overall, 43% of Macho Uno’s stakes horses are out of mares that show Mr. Prospector in their pedigrees within five generations. Dams carrying Gone West have participated in this success producing runners like 2017 Saratoga SW Picco Uno (dam by Western Expression) and SW Hampstead Heath (dam by Gone West).

Given that Macho Uno is a half-brother to Awesome Again (by Deputy Minister) it’s no surprise that he’s produced good results with Vice Regent/Deputy Minister-influenced mares. Vice Regent appears in a total of 15 stakes horses by Macho Uno, including MG1W winner Private Zone and current G3W/G1SP Tommy Macho.

Tommy Macho is also an example of Macho Uno’s affinity with Seattle Slew, an influence found in 12 more of his stakes horses. Among these is G2W Macho Macho, SW Holy Reina (dam by Capote) and 2017 SW Picco Uno (second dam by Dixie Union who’s out of Capote daughter).

Icecapade is bred on the same Nearctic/Native Dancer cross as Northern Dancer and mares by his son Wild Again have been extremely successful when bred to Macho Uno. From just eight starters the Macho Uno/Wild Again cross has produced six winners including G1W Macho Again and G3W Silsita.

Like Mr. Prospector, Sharpen Up is a paternal grandson of Native Dancer and is an ancestor of some important Macho Uno runners. G1W Wicked Style is out of a mare by Sharpen Up’s son, Trempolino. SW Firenze Feeling is out of a mare by the Sharpen Up grandson Elmaamul, by Diesis, who is also the second damsire of Overheard.
