First Winner for Champion Hunters Bay

Hunters Bay, a Champion multiple graded stakes-winner and grade 1-placed son of Ghostzapper, got his first winner Oct. 19 when Bay of Cats broke her maiden in a game 5 1/2 furlong race at Delaware Park.

The filly, raced by Derek Brown and trained by Mary Eppler, got her first win in her second start. Though tracking near the back of the six-horse field early, she ran down The Bay Express in deep stretch to win by a neck.

Dr. Tom Bowman's Roland Farm and Adena Springs bred Bay of Cats in Maryland. The filly is the first foal out of the Dance With Ravens daughter Cat Bird, who is a half sister to black-type stakes winner Halo Cat and black-type placed winner Joyce Ann.

Hunters Bay, bred by Frank Stronach's Adena Springs and raced by Stronach, won six races and finished second four times out of 14 starts. In 2012 championship season, he won the Eclipse Stakes (G3) and Dominion Day Stakes (G3) at Woodbine Race Course and finished second to Wise Dan in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile Stakes (G1T). He retired with $611,091 in earnings and now stands at Adena Springs North.

Champion Hunters Bay was an exceptionally gifted and versatile runner. He was a winner on dirt, a multiple graded winner on polytrack and Grade 1-placed on turf. He’s a son of Ghostzapper and grandson of Awesome Again, two Hall of Fame runners and prolific stallions.

Ghostzapper and Awesome Again have had very good success with the Hail to Reason broodmare line and Hunters Bay can be expected to follow suit. The Roberto branch of this line is worth targeting in particular. Ghostzpapper’s G1W Contested and G2W Proctor’s Ledge are out of a mares by the Roberto grandson Arch and his Blue Grass S. (G1) winner Stately Victor is out of a mare by the Roberto son Dynaformer. Ghostzapper/Awesome Again have also sired stakes winners out of mares by Kris S., Silver Hawk and Red Ransom.

Seattle Slew-line mares should also be strongly considered for Hunters Bay. Six stakes winners (four graded) by Ghostzapper are out of Seattle Slew-line mares, including 2014 Whitney H. (G1) hero Moreno and G3W Matthewsburg out of daughters of A. P. Indy. Ghostzapper's G2W Mystical Star and SW Zapper Belle are both out of daughters of Capote. The overall Awesome Again/Seattle Slew cross has yielded at least 14 stakes winners, seven at the graded level.

Caro is another promising influence for Hunters Bay. Ghostzapper has sired GSW/millionaire Za Approval and GSW Mr Maybe out of daughters of the Caro son With Approval. His 2017 2YO SW Dak Attack is out of a mare by the Caro great-grandson Indian Charlie (by In Excess) Awesome Again (G1W Toccet) and Ghostzapper (SW King’s Ghost) have both sired SWs out of mares by the Caro stallion Cozzene. Overall, the Awesome Again/Caro cross has produced at least 10 stakes winners.

Reinforcing the Mr. Prospector in Hunters Bay pedigree should prove beneficial as around half of Ghostzapper’s stakes horses are out of mares showing Mr. Prospector within five generations

With Forty Niner granddaughters Ghostzapper has sired six stakes winners, five of them Graded including G1W Molly Morgan (dam by Distorted Humor).

We find Fappiano in eight stakes horses by Ghostzapper. Three of them, including GSW Pacific Ocean are out of mares by Unbridled, while MG2W Paulassilverlining is out of a mare by the Unbridled stallion Grindstone.

Mares showing both Mr. Prospector and Storm Bird/Storm Cat have produced a high degree of quality with Ghostzapper. MG2W Go Maggie Go is out of a mare by Tale of the Cat (bred Storm Cat over Mr. Prospector) and G1-placed 2YO Zapperkat it out of a mare by Tale of the Cat’s son Lion Heart. We also find Mr. P & Storm Cat in the dams of G1W Better Lucky and SW Elghayoor. Mr. Prospector/Storm Bird is present in the dams of G3W Angel Terrace and SW Ghost Locket.

Reinforcing the In Reality/Relaunch influences is also promising for Hunters Bay. Ghostzapper’s Champion & G1 winner Shaman Ghost shows a double of Relaunch at 3x5 as his third dam is by the Relaunch stallion Skywalker. The second dams of Stately Victor and G2W Hear the Ghost are by Valid Appeal. Contested also carries a double of In Reality through Believe It, sire of her third dam.

Holy Bull’s sire, Great Above, is bred on the reverse of the Intentionally/Rough n’ Tumble cross that produced In Reality. Breeders’ Cup/Eclipse Champion Judy the Beauty and Queen’s Plate heroine Holy Helena are among the stakes horses Ghostzapper has sired with Holy Bull daughters.

Ghostzapper is the sire of six starters out of mares by Gilded Time. All are winners, including G1W Shaman Ghost and GSW Whiskey Ticket.
