Giant Gizmo and Sligo Bay Sovereign Award Finalists
The finalists for 2016 Sovereign Awards were announced on January 24 and the Adena Springs North stallions Giant Gizmo and Sligo Bay were well represented.

Giant Gizmo's Amis Gizmo (pictured) is the favorite for Three-Year-Old Male honors. The Ivan Dalos homebred was a dominant winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes, rolling by 5 3/4 lengths in Canadian Classic. He also scored in the Plate Trial Stakes and Grade 3 Ontario Derby, galloping home by six lengths while establishing the new nine-furlong standard on the Woodbine main track. This is the second Sovereign Award nomination for Amis Gizmo. He finished second in the voting for champion Two-Year-Old male despite an unbeaten 2015 juvenile campaign.

Sligo Bay is the sire of two of the past three Woodbine Oaks winners, Neshama and Lexie Lou, both of whom are 2016 Sovereign Award finalists.

On the strength of her '16 Oaks victory, Neshama is a nominee for champion Three-Year-Old Filly. Finishing immediately behind her in the Oaks were fellow finalists Gamble's Ghost (by Ghostzapper) and Caren.

Lexie Lou is no stranger to Sovereign Award accolades having won Horse of the Year, Three-Year-Old Filly and Turf Female titles in 2014. She is favored for another trophy in the latter category. The Gary Barber-owned mare was victorious is a pair of 2016 Grade 2 events, the Nassau Stakes and the Dance Smartly Stakes in which she sprinted to a wire-to-wire score. She is the only finalist in her category with multiple graded wins in 2016.

Lexie Lou finished her career with 10 victories in 24 starts and over $1.7 million in earnings. She was sold for $1 million at the Keeneland November sale.

The Sovereign Awards ceremony will take place on April 13 at Palais Royale in Toronto.

Mares from the Fappiano branch of the Mr. Prospector line are working predictably well with Giant Gizmo. He’s sired Classic/Graded winner Amis Gizmo plus two additional stakes horses out of mares by Victory Gallop, a son of the Fappiano stallion Cryptoclearance

This pattern figured to be a powerful for Giant Gizmo based on the success of the larger Giant’s Causeway/Fappiano cross that's produced over 20 stakes winners and three Grade 1 winners. Unbridled's Song is the damsire of seven of those making his daughters and granddaughters especially attractive for Giant Gizmo. Mares by other Unbridled-line stallions like Broken Vow, Grindstone, his son Birdstone, and daughters and granddaughters of the Cryptoclearance grandson Candy Ride, can also be considered prime targets.

Victory Gallop is out of a mare by Vice Regent, an influence we see in nearly 60% Giant Gizmo’s stakes horses. SW Freitag is out of a mare by the Vice Regent son Regal Classic, also the second damsire of G3SP Ethical Funds. The dam of that runner actually carries a double of Vice Regent. This put mares showing Marquetry in play as he too is bred on the Mr. Prospector/Vice Regent cross. Silver Deputy is bred Vice Regent over Mr. Prospector and we find his influence in SP Splashy Gizmo’s second damline. Daughters and granddaughters of Awesome Again (by Deputy Minister, second dam by Mr. Prospector) should also go well with Giant Gizmo.

Giant Gizmo has had success with the Forty Niner branch of the Mr. Prospector tree. SP Splashy Gizmo is out of a mare by the Forty Niner son Pikepass while the second dam of Classic/graded winner Brooklynsway is by another Forty Niner stallion, Editor’s Note.

SW Ruth Less Blue and his stakes-placed full sibling Blu Without You are out of a mare by Lemon Drop Kid, a son of Kingmambo. The larger Giant's Causeway/Kingmambo cross has yielded at least 13 other stakes winners, four of them at the G1 level.

Other Mr. Prospector-line strains that have done well with Giant’s Causeway and his sons include Seeking the Gold, Gone West, Thunder Gulch and Machiavellian.

Reinforcing the Storm Bird influence has paid dividends for Giant Gizmo. Brooklynsway is out of a mare by the Storm Cat son Radio Star and is among the over 50 total stakes winners inbred to Storm Cat so far (within four generations). We also find a double of Storm Bird in Splashy Gizmo’s pedigree.

Two of Giant Gizmo’s most recent stakes winners are out of mares by the Caro-line sire Gibson County and the Valid Appeal son Valid Expectations.

The Giant Gizmo SW Spin the King, is out of mare by Bold Executive, a son of Bold Ruckus. We also find Bold Ruckus in the pedigrees of Ruth Less Blue/Blu Without You  and SP Navaeh's Valentine as the sire of their third dams.

There are over 50 stakes winners bred Giant’s Causeway over Danzig. Many of those are out of mares by Danehill, making daughters of the Adena Springs stallion Danehill son North Light certainly worth trying with Giant Gizmo.
