Ghostzapper's Paulassilverlining an Eclipse Award Finalist

The Ghostzapper daughter Paulassilveringlining was named an Eclipse Award finalist for champion...

Although a Grade 1 victory may have eluded Paulassilverlining in 2016, she sure racked up a lot of style points with the combination of class, speed, and consistency she displayed throughout a terrific campaign.

Owned by her breeder, New York businessman Vincent Scuderi, and trained by Michelle Nevin, Paulassilverlining won five of nine starts, accounting for four stakes, three of them graded. Even in defeat, the 4-year-old filly turned in highly creditable efforts when finishing fifth in the Grade 1 Ballerina and third in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

The year began with a 9 1/4-length romp in a February allowance over the Aqueduct inner track, earning her an eye-catching 107 Beyer Speed Figure. She then finished second as an odds-on favorite in the Correction in March before knocking out back-to-back Grade 3 stakes, the Distaff at Aqueduct in April and the Vagrancy at Belmont Park in May. Jose Ortiz, who rode Paulassilverlining in all but two of her starts in 2016, was aboard for all of those races.

Paulassilverling then resurfaced at Saratoga as the 7-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss. Flaunting her versatility by racing near the back of the pack in the early going, Paulassilverlining then roared to the lead in midstretch, only to be nailed in the last few jumps by Haveyougoneaway.

The Ballerina proved similarly frustrating. Always prominent in the seven-furlong race, Paulassilverlining faded in late stretch when defeated just 2 1/2 lengths by Haveyougoneaway.

Prepping for the Breeders’ Cup, Paulassilverlining then came through for her many Belmont backers when prevailing as the 9-5 favorite in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom on Oct. 1.

“I always expect her to run well because she always does,” an elated Nevin told Daily Racing Form afterward.

Next up was the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita. Overlooked at 15-1 in the field of 13, Paulassilverlining was a major factor from the opening bell under Joe Talamo, forcing all the pace before holding sway for third, two lengths behind the victorious Finest City.

“She gave me a big effort the whole way,” Talamo said. “She really is a classy filly.”

As Paulassilverlining continued to thrive at her Belmont base in the Breeders’ Cup aftermath, Nevin chose to run her once more in the $200,000 Garland of Roses over the Aqueduct inner track Dec. 10. The filly was pounded down to 15 cents on the dollar and responded accordingly, winning by 2 1/4 lengths and pushing her career bankroll into seven figures.

“I’m very proud of her,” said Nevin, a former longtime assistant to Rick Dutrow. “How could you not be? She’s just been a star from the get-go.”

Paulassilverlining, a bay Kentucky-bred, was sired by Ghostzapper and produced by Seeking the Silver, by Grindstone. In 2016, she competed exclusively in dirt races from six to seven furlongs and ended the season with five wins and two seconds from nine starts and earnings of $680,000. For her career, which began in summer 2014, she is 8 for 18 with earnings of $1,008,950.

If all goes to plan in 2017, Paulassilverlining could get another shot at Finest City when the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint is renewed Nov. 4 at Del Mar. Both are scheduled to remain in training as 5-year-olds, with Paulassilverlining currently being pointed to the Grade 2 Barbara Fritchie on Feb. 18 at Laurel Park, where she’s likely to be a huge favorite in that seven-furlong fixture when making her seasonal debut.

Around half of Ghostzapper’s stakes horses are out of mares showing Mr. Prospector within five generations and the Forty Niner, Fappiano, Seeking the Gold, Gone West, and Two Punch branches are proving most effective.

From 15 starters out of Forty Niner granddaughters Ghostzapper has sired six stakes winners, three of them out of Distorted Humor mares - G1W Molly Morgan, G3W Gloryzapper and SW Ghostly Presence. Ghostzapper also has stakes winners out of mares by Twining (G2W Arena Elvira), Coronado’s Quest (G2W Hear the Ghost), and Gold Case (SW Mt Veeder).

We find Fappiano in eight stakes horses by Ghostzapper. Three of them, including GSW Pacific Ocean, are out of mares by Unbridled, while MG2W Paulassilverlining is out of a Grindstone mare.

Seeking the Gold is found the pedigrees of six Ghostzapper stakes horses, including Grade 1 winner Better Lucky, 2016 G2W McCraken (dams by Seeking the Gold) and Contested (second dam by Seeking the Gold).

G3W Angel Terrace & SW Elghayoor are both out of daughters of Gone West while MGSW Gamble’s Ghost is out of a mare by Gone West’s full brother, Secret Claim.

Champion Hunters Bay and his stakes-winning/millionaire full-sister are out of a mare by Smoke Glacken, by Two Punch. From daughters of Two Punch Ghostzapper has sired SWs My Fiona and Grecian Maiden.

Mares showing both Mr. Prospector and Storm Bird/Storm Cat have produced a high degree of quality with Ghostzapper. 2016 MG2W Go Maggie Go is out of a mare by Tale of the Cat (bred Storm Cat over Mr. Prospector) and 2016 G1-placed 2YO Zapperkat it out of a mare by Tale of the Cat’s son Lion Heart. We also find Mr. P & Storm Cat in the dams of Better Lucky and Elghayoor. Mr. Prospector/Storm Bird is present in the dams of Angel Terrace and SW Ghost Locket.

Contested is an example of Ghostzapper’s tremendous success with the Roberto branch of the Hail to Reason broodmare line. She is out of a mare by the Kris S. stallion Arch, while Blue Grass S. (G1) winner Stately Victor is out of a daughter of Dynaformer. Ghostzapper has also sired stakes winners out of mares by Silver Hawk (G3W La Cloche) and Red Ransom (also the second damsire of My Fiona).

Ghostzapper is out of a daughter of the In Reality son Relaunch and reinforcing these influences has yielded success. Champion & G1 winner Shaman Ghost shows a double of Relaunch at 3x5 as his third dam is by the Relaunch stallion Skywalker. The second dams of Stately Victor and Hear the Ghost are by Valid Appeal. Contested also carries a double of In Reality through Believe It, sire of her third dam.

Holy Bull’s sire Great Above is bred on the reverse of the Intentionally/Rough n’ Tumble cross that produced In Reality. Breeders’ Cup & Eclipse Champion Judy the Beauty is one of two stakes horses from the first seven starters Ghostzapper has sired with Holy Bull daughters.

Ghostzapper is the sire of six starters out of mares by Gilded Time. All are winners, including Shaman Ghost and GSW Whiskey Ticket.

Ghostzapper has done well with mares showing Caro, siring the likes of GSW/millionaire Za Approval and GSW Mr Maybe out of daughters of the Caro son With Approval. They are among the 10 Ghostzapper stakes horses out of dams showing Caro. Three of the others, including GSW Gloryzapper, show the Caro son Siberian Express, better know as the grandsire of Indian Charlie. Mares by that late stallion and his exceptional son Uncle Mo (out of a daughter of Arch) promise to go well with Ghostzapper.
