Perfect Start: 3 Starters, 3 Winners for Capo Bastone

07.28.2018 -

Cruman Tapote, sent off as the 9-5 favorite in this debut run, broke like a shot from post two in a 5-furlong Maiden Special at Indiana Grand. He was on the engine through an opening quarter in :22.74, enjoyed a 3 1/2-length advantage in the stretch and kept finding more while racing on his left lead to graduate by 1 3/4 lengths over nine other rivals.

The victory made him the third debut Maiden Special winner from as many starters for his sire, Capo Bastone.

Cruman Tapote was bred by his owner, Bad Boy Racing. Trainer Brad Cox gave the leg up to Fernando De La Cruz for the victory.

Capo Bastone got off the mark at the Keeneland Spring meeting when his first starter, Hargus, sped to victory in a 4 1/2-furlong Maiden Special contest. Next came Starship Nala, who debuted a winner in a 5-furlong Maiden Special at Gulfstream Park in early July.

Capo Bastone was an impressive juvenile debut winner himself, earning 'TDN Rising Star' status when unveiled at Del Mar. He culminated his juvenile season with placings in the Grade 1 FrontRunner S. and Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). His signature win came the following season in the sire-making King's Bishop S. (G1) at Saratoga, a race won by the likes of Hard Spun, Tale of the Cat and More Than Ready.
