Sovereign Award Nominations Include Progeny of Ghostzapper & Silent Name

02.02.2018 -

The Sovereign Award nominations for excellence during the 2017 Canadian racing season were announced on February 1. Adena Springs/Stronach Stables are finalists again along with a son of Silent Name and two Ghostzapper daughters.

The Stronach Stables homebred Holy Helena is the strong favorite to take home honors in the 3yo Female category. The Ghostzapper filly won the Woodbine Oaks in her stakes debut and followed up that effort with a rousing victory over males in the $1 million Queen's Plate

For the third straight year the Ghostzapper daughter Gamble's Ghost is a Sovereign Award finalist. After nominations for 2yo Female in 2015 and 3yo Female in 2016 the Ivan Dalos homebred is a 2017 finalist for Older Female. She won four of her seven starts last season, including scores in the Belle Mahone Stakes and the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes.

Ghostzapper is already the sire of a pair of Sovereign Award champions - Shaman Ghost and Hunters Bay - and is the sire of four total champions so far.

The Silent Name son Be Vewy Vewy Quiet is among the finalists for 2yo Male after a remarkably consistent 2017 campaign. He began the year with a pair of victories including the August 5 Clarendon Stakes. He finished on the board in four subsequent stakes contests taking home the trophy in the November 18 Frost King Stakes. He is the only juvenile among the three finalists with two Stakes victories and his $201,733 in earnings is about equal to the combined bankroll of his two competitors.

Adena Springs is a finalist for Outstanding Breeder along with Anderson Farms Ont. Inc., and Ivan Dalos' Tall Oaks Farm. Adena Springs has won this award 11 times, including the past two years.

Stronach Stables, Chiefswood Stable and Ivan Dalos are the three finalists for Outstanding Owner. Stronach Stables is a nine-time winner in this category, last earning the statute coming in 2005.
