Macho Uno's Hy Riverside Prevails Big Red Stakes

06.03.2019 -

Back class ruled at Gulfstream Park Sunday when stakes veteran Hy Riverside prevailed with a one-length victory in the $75,000 Big Red Stakes following a stretch duel with fellow veteran stakes performer Mr. Jordan.

Making his second start since being transferred to trainer Jorge Delgado, Hy Riverside scored his second stakes victory and earned blacktype for the sixth time. His signature victory came in the 2017 the Sunshine Millions Classic.

The talented and durable son of Macho Uno races for Mar Racing Stable, Inc. and now has seven total victories and a bankroll of $432,185.

“He had a better trip than he did last time (in the Big Drama Stakes). He had a terrible trip. We were expecting him to win that day,” Delgado said.

Hy Riverside and jockey Miguel Vasquez raced a few lengths off the pace along the backstretch as 8-5 favorite Ceevee showed the way under Edgard Zayas past fractions of 23.29 and 45.74 seconds for the first half-mile of the one-turn mile stakes for 3-year-olds and up. Mr. Jordan, who pressed the pace on the backstretch and around the far turn under Edgar Prado, made a strong run at the pacesetter on the turn into the stretch and moved to the lead at the top of the stretch. Hy Riverside followed Mr. Jordan on the turn before swinging wide to engage the multiple-stakes winner for the stretch drive.

Mr. Jordan, a 7-year-old gelding with more than $850,000 in earnings, continued to fight through the stretch, only to be worn down by Hy Riverside nearing the wire. Eye of the Jedi finished third.

Delgado said the $250,000 Smile Sprint (G3) on the June 29 Summit of Speed card some consideration while noting that the son of Macho Uno is eligible for Florida-bred stakes throughout the summer.
