Future Adena Springs Stallion Delta Prince Crowned a Grade 1 Winner & Millionaire at Keeneland

04.12.2019 -

Stronach Stable's homebred Delta Prince, last at the head of the stretch, roared past longshot Clyde's Image in deep stretch to win the 31st running of the $300,000 Maker's 46 Mile (G1) for 4-year-olds and up by 1½ lengths before a Friday afternoon crowd of 14,675 at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky.

Defending Maker's 46 Mile champion Heart to Heart and Great Wide Open (IRE) swapped the lead through fractions of :24.25, :47.79 and 1:11.98 while Delta Prince lagged at the back of the field under Javier Castellano.

At the top of the stretch, Qurbaan made the first run at the leaders, coming three wide, and was soon joined by Clyde's Image to his outside. Those two hooked up at the sixteenth pole, but rallying fastest of all on the far outside was Delta Prince, who drew off at the wire.

Trained by James Jerkens, the royally-bred Delta Prince covered the mile on a turf course rated as good in 1:35.97. It is the second victory in the race for Jerkens, who won in 2005 with eventual Breeders' Cup Mile (G1) champ Artie Schiller.

The red-hot Castellano, who won his fifth graded stakes (and second Grade 1 race) of the meet, has four wins in the race.
"I tried to take my time with the horse and let the race develop—horses were going quickly," Castellano told Keeneland media. "Then I liked the way he finished. He finished really, really well."
Albin Jimenez, rider of runner-up Clyde's Image, also spoke highly of the winner. "(Clyde's Image) gave me everything he's got. He lugged a bit, but it didn't matter. (Delta Prince) is a super horse. We were second-best."

A future Adena Springs Kentucky stallion, Delta Prince is a 6-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Street Cry (IRE) out of the A.P. Indy mare Delta Princess. He is a half-brother to champion Royal Delta and to Crown Queen, winner of Keeneland's 2014 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup (G1). Delta Prince's Maker's 46 Mile victory was worth $180,000 and increased his earnings to $1,173,819 with a record of 13-5-3-4.
