About - Adena Springs

Welcome

We're glad you have taken the opportunity to visit the Adena Springs website. It is our hope that through this site you can acquaint yourself with what the thoroughbred industry means to us. To that end, we would like to introduce and discuss the different facets of our operation and to give you some insights into our unique thoroughbred breeding and racing program, our priorities, and the promise we hold for the great sport of racing.

Adena Spring's relationship with the thoroughbred horse industry spans five decades. We like to think that during that time we’ve learned a great deal about what it takes to be successful in both racing and breeding these wonderful animals. Some of these things we have gleaned from others, and we have figured more than a few things out on our own. We have also been fortunate enough to have the resources to put into practice what we have learned. We are confident that you share this same commitment to the thoroughbred, which is why we’re eager to cooperate with you to breed and raise the best horse possible.

If you are involved in the thoroughbred industry, whether through one horse or 300, as a full-time pursuit or as a spare time avocation, you most assuredly have expectations for success. It is virtually impossible to achieve anything through half measures or mediocrity of efforts. We believe the same, and it is the foundation of the Adena Springs philosophy. Additionally we commit all our resources to be here for our clients, to work with you in support of our stallions, and giving all of our horses – be they racehorses, yearlings, two-year-olds and broodmares - every opportunity to maximize their potential. Our personal insistence on rock-solid, uncompromising performance in our breeding stock is well known. You have our assurance that our management and administration, our hands-on horsemen and our professional associates will be held to the same high standard.

Thank you for your interest in our program. Most of all, thank you for sharing our passion for the thoroughbred and breeding and racing industries. We encourage you to contact any of our facilities to arrange a personal visit or to have any of your questions addressed.

We look forward to working with you.

Our History

The original Adena Springs thoroughbred farm in Kentucky, consisting of 640 acres located on Route 60 just outside of Versailles, was purchased in August of 1989. The oldest known inhabitants of the land were the Adena Indians, who had been attracted to the area by quality of the water in the free-flowing local springs. The farm was named after the Adenas, both as a tribute and as a commitment to perpetuate in this land the grace, spirit and strength they instilled there.

In 2005 we purchased more than 2,000 acres in Bourbon County, KY, and designed a magnificent, state-of-the-art thoroughbred facility for this fresh land. In August 2007, we moved our entire Kentucky operation, including the all of our stallions, to Paris, KY, beginning a new chapter in our Central Kentucky history.

Adena Springs South began operation in October of 1996 with the purchase of the 453-acre Lin-Drake Farm, located just north of Ocala in Williston, Florida. In November of 1997, an additional 553 acres were purchased on nearby State Highway 318. The following June, the purchase of two adjacent tracts of land brought the total amount of acreage in Florida to 1100.

The expansion to the farm’s current state was completed in July of 1999, when an additional 1050 acres were purchased directly across Highway 318. This has allowed us to centralize our entire regional operation in one location, as Adena Springs South now encompasses some 3800 acres of some of the best land on which to raise thoroughbreds in Florida. It is here that our young racing prospects receive their early lessons on our one-mile main track. The training center also features eight spacious 36-stall barns, constructed with the safety and welfare of our horses and staff as number one priorities.

When Adena Springs began operation, it was with the thought that it would be a private nursery, designed to provide horses for the Stronach Stable racing operation. These goals changed dramatically, almost from the beginning, and the focus of the farm is now epitomized by our approach to sales and stallions.

From the start, the Stronach family has been firmly committed to offering the best thoroughbred stallion roster anywhere, and we are extremely proud of our success.

Frank Stronach

Frank Stronach has been involved in thoroughbred breeding and racing for more than 40 years. He believes in a natural, holistic approach to raising horses, and stresses patience at every stage of their development. He never compromises the well-being of young horses by asking too much too soon, and that approach has been the cornerstone of his success in this industry.

Frank Stronach/Adena Springs has earned a total of 12 Eclipse Awards, including a record eight for Outstanding Breeder. He earned the first of his three consecutive Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Owner in 1998 and added a fourth in 2008. Frank Stronach was handed the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Breeder in 2000 and Adena Springs was honored with an unprecedented five straight Eclipse Awards for Outstanding Breeder from 2004-2008 and again in 2010 and 2012. Frank's operation is the first in history to be named Outstanding Breeder seven times in one decade. Adena Springs was also the Leading Breeder by earnings in North America for ten consecutive years (2003 - 2012).

Adena Springs is the breeders of five Eclipse Award Champions: Macho Uno (2000 2YO Male), Perfect Sting (2000 Female Turf), Ghostzapper (2004 Horse of the Year & Older Male), Ginger Punch (2007 Older F/M) and Judy the Beauty (2014 Female Sprinter)

In addition, Frank has taken home 20 Sovereign Awards. He has earned a record 11 Sovereign Awards for Outstanding Breeder: 1984, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2015 and 2016. He's also been recognized Canada’s Outstanding Owner nine times: 1993, 1994, 1995, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003 and 2005. Frank was bestowed with the E. P. Taylor Award of Merit at the 2016 Sovereign Awards ceremony. Adena Springs is the only program to win the Eclipse Award and Sovereign Award as Outstanding Breeder in the same year (accomplished in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010). Frank has been recognized as North America’s top breeder by stakes winners and earnings several times.

Adena Springs is the leading breeder in Breeders' Cup history by money won and is the breeder of a co-record six Breeders' Cup champions including being the first to breed a Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner who sired a Breeders’ Cup Classic winner: Awesome Again (1998), sire of Horse of the Year and Hall of Famer Ghostzapper (2004), also bred and raced by Adena Springs/Stronach Stables.

Another source of personal satisfaction for Frank is the stallion roster at Adena Springs. He stood his first thoroughbred stallion in 1996, and by 2002 Adena Springs was home to North America’s Champion Sire El Prado, now an important sire of sires. His son, Kitten's Joy, was Champion Sire in 2013 and his other top sons include Medaglia d'Oro, sire of runners like Hall of Famer Rachel Alexandra and Songbird. In 2004, Adena Springs was the only farm to stand three of America’s top ten sires. Today, the stallion roster at Adena Springs Kentucky boasts four Breeders' Cup Classic champions: Awesome Again, his son Ghostzapper, Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man.

The first-class facilities for the horses at Adena Springs are well documented. However, Frank takes great pride in the facilities provided for his dedicated staff. The standard of living enjoyed by those housed in the employee villages at Adena Springs is unsurpassed in the thoroughbred industry.

The Stronach family's commitment to first-class racing comes from a more elemental source – that is, a simple commitment to the horse. This commitment extends to quality bloodlines, quality racetrack performance and quality conditions for breeding, raising and training the horse. It is the drive to excel in every aspect of horsemanship that Frank refers to as a "labor of love, my passion."
